The student of admirable character upholds principles of morality andĮthics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously.Ī student demonstrates citizenship by contributing ideas that improve civic life of school, cooperates by complying with school rules, (i.e. Student leaders exhibit leadership in the classroom as well as within the school community. Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, individuals who exemplify positive attitudes and exert type of leadership that directly influences others for good. This quality is defined by a student’s willingness to render any service to school, including helping other students in class, willingness to render worthwhile service to school community and willingness to aid faculty. Next, these students will be considered on the basis of service, leadership, character and citizenship. Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or higher (2 out of first 3 marking periods at Bailey MS) meet the scholarship requirement for membership and are eligible to move on in the process. What does an exemplary NJHS candidate look like? The NJHS advisors do not have a vote on the Faculty Council and will not be making any decisions regarding acceptance, rejection, or dismissal. The Faculty Council also serves as the group who determines if a member should be dismissed because of a failure to meet expectations in one of the five areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, or Citizenship. The Faculty Council is an anonymous group of faculty members who make recommendations about who will be invited for induction into the NJHS. After the required evaluation forms from certified faculty members have been submitted, our Faculty Council will review them. The Faculty Council selects inductees for the NJHS. Therefore, just because a student qualifies based on their cumulative GPA (scholarship), does not mean they will automatically be inducted into the NJHS as all criteria will be considered.Īll GPA’s are printed on the quarterly report card.

Certified faculty members will evaluate students in the remaining areas of Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. That means, students in 7th or 8th grade with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher (2 out of the first 3 marking periods at Bailey MS) can make a student eligible for consideration, but does not guarantee selection. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.Īt Bailey MS, in accordance with national standards set by NJHS, students will first qualify for the induction process through their demonstration of success in the area of scholarship. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS (High School) and NJHS (Middle School). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship.
